501 CHURCH AND FRIENDS INVITES YOU TO EXPERIENCE
THE BODY IN PRAYER AND WORSHIP
I WOULD LOVE TO RUN ANOTHER SERIES LIKE THIS AGAIN
In this series we will explore ways that yoga can inform, assist, and deepen our life in prayer and our relationship with God. We will draw upon the depth of understanding offered by the ancient tradition of yoga as a devotional practice and as a means of preparing the mind and body for meditation (or centering prayer).
The first 4 sessions will focus on different approaches to finding God in stillness and silence, The yoga practices will focus specifically to prepare us for each approach. These are: Coming to the level of sensation and breath in the poses to bring us more deeply into the present moment; Holding poses so as to practice stopping the momentum of our thoughts and activities to make room for new life; Moving in yoga poses so that we may let go of the restlessness of the body that the mind may more easily come home in the body to hear the word of God in scripture or more easily return to a word as anchor; Yoga practiced as devotional postures to lead us into medtiation with icons as windows to God.
The last 2 sessions will offer liturgy with yoga: Worshiping with yoga posture sequences to sung prayers. These practices call us to integrate mind, body, and spirit in our worship. While the series will be primarily experiential, there will be opportunities for reflection on how the body has been used and understood in the Bible and the history of Christianity.
